CURTIS HEARD
...has been musically active in the Los Angeles/Long Beach area for twenty years as a pianist, accompanist, musical director, composer and arranger. Since 1992 he has taught vocal music at Wilson High School in Long Beach, and has directed the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choirs at Bixby Knolls Christian Church since 1991. In 1998, Curtis was chosen to direct the music of the Disciples of Christ Regional Assembly, displaying many of his own arrangements and compositions.
Curtis began playing piano for ballet studios and accompanying while still in high school, and started directing church choirs while a student at California State University, Long Beach. Before coming to BKCC, Curtis was the music director at La Habra United Methodist Church.
He has been the musical director of numerous Musical Theater productions, including "Gypsy!", "Oklahoma", "Anything Goes", and "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". Curtis has served as assistant musical director with the Civic Light Opera of the South Bay Cities for their productions of "Man Of La Mancha", "Oliver", and "Anything Goes". As a pianist, he has performed with the Pacific Symphony, the Cypress pops orchestra, Zephyr: Voices Unbound, and other professional ensembles. He has also played in productions of "Working", "Grease", "The Sound Of Music", "The Music Man", and "Oklahoma!".
Curtis has also accompanied many choirs and singers in the Long Beach area. He has collaborated with performance artist Ken Roht as arranger/composer/musical director on "AN ENJOYABLE EVENING WITH THREE SPECIAL GIRLS" (Itchey Foote Cabaret, Backlot Theater), "LARRY SWELL'S BIG BANG" (L.A.T.C.), "SEVEN SEALS AND A RIDING MONKEY" (Playwright's Arena) and Ken's band ORPHEAN CIRCUS. He has also composed and arranged music for "LEOPOLD AND LOEB" by Laurel Meade, and for several animated films by Chris Liles. Some of his choral arrangements have been published by Delamo Music. He and his compositions and arrangements were featured in a concert in February at Belmont Heights Methodist Church, as part of their “Resident Treasures” series.
Curtis Heard lives in Seal Beach with his singer/actress wife Lisa Bode Heard, his eight-year-old son Clayton, and a wonderful mutt named Izzy. In addition to his passion for all kinds of music, Curtis enjoys camping and hiking, cooking, and spending time with his family.
