Our February outing will be a hike up to the San Antonio Ski Hut, followed by a day of snowball fights, snow forts, and sledding. This will be a high altitude hike, starting off at approxiamte 8,000 feet. The air will be thin and cold, and will require those attending to BE PREPARED for several possibilities.
Please have breakfast before you arrive. We will cook all our weekend meals as a group, sharing the kitchen facilities with the other people at the Hut.
You will need to dress appropriately for hiking and playing in snow and cold weather. For the hike into camp, you will need to wear waterprood hiking boots (NO tennis shoes allowed). Some type of waterproof pants, like nylon shell pants or the like. It is also recommended you have gaiters to keep the snow out of your boots and pant legs. As always, dress in the layer system, meaning you will need thermals/long underwear (not cotton) and other layers underneath your outer (water- and windproof) jacket to keep you warm. A hat and a beanie as well; you could wear either depending on the sun and conditionsAlso bring a change of clothes so you can drive home in a dry set of clothing.
At least one change of socks, t-shirts, and underwear is required; you will need to change out of wet clothing.
If you have any questions on gear, please contact Scoutmaster Phil or Don Smith immediately. This is a high-altitude, cold weather hike. BE PREPARED.
Keep in mind everyone will need a sleeping bag rated to 20°, a ground pad, and pillow.
More information will follow at the Feb 11 Troop meeting from Scoutmaster Phil and Don Smith after they hike the trail on Monday, Feb 11.
Everyone should have their The Troop 29 Ten Essentials with them at all times.
Keep an eye on the weather so you are properly dressed for this outing.
