'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime
By Robert Smith

Randall Coleman, Director

'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime is a Canadian carol, which was originally written by a Jesuit Missionary in the Huron Indian language. The lyric is set to the melody of a 16th century French tune. This setting of the carol draws upon the Huron heritage for inspiration throughout the piece. The opening statement, in the flute and clarinet sections, sets the mood
-- 'Twas in the mood of wintertime
-- When all the birds had fled."
The ending depicts the forlorn space and anguish of wintertime as endured by the Huron Indian nation.
